The politics of ‘ulamā’ knowledge in Islamic legal discourse within the discipline of uṣūl al-fiqh has not yet been subjected to a critical analysis. In the tradition of Islamic studies, uṣūl al-fiqh has been positioned as a text that discusses the theory of Islamic law.  In fact, the credos of uṣūl al-fiqh are the products of ‘ulamā’ knowledge, which serve to legitimate or delegitimise political power.  Concurrently, it represents the ‘ulamā’ perspective in addressing theological tensions and political turbulence that arise as a consequence of the contestation of religious authority in the public sphere.  This academic matter indicates that the knowledge held by ‘ulamā’ has the potential to either affirm or criticise the hegemony of power through religious discourses.
