“Exceptional Woman (A Muslima Version)”
Oleh: Febriyanti Lestari
Salam,
It’s me,
A proud Muslima.
You may think I’m oppressed,
I’m not.
You may think I’m submissive,
You surely don’t know me.
You may think I’m uneducated,
Alas, that’s far off the mark.
You may see veiling a sign of weakness,
I’m afraid it’s the opposite.
Let me be clear.
A proud Muslima.
You may think I’m oppressed,
I’m not.
You may think I’m submissive,
You surely don’t know me.
You may think I’m uneducated,
Alas, that’s far off the mark.
You may see veiling a sign of weakness,
I’m afraid it’s the opposite.
Let me be clear.
It’s me,
A proud Muslima.
A former dean at my college,
Discipline and integrity are key for me.
Constantly thirst for knowledge,
I earned a doctorate degree in Islamic Studies,
And always eager to learn more.
A former leader of Nadhlatul Ulama’s Muslimat,
I’m at all times amazed by the accomplishment,
Of my fellow female Muslim intellectuals.
A proud wife of a very supportive husband,
My equal colleague and best friend,
Always committed to educate,
Young Indonesian Muslims,
To live a blessed life in the world,
And in the Hereafter.
Yes, it’s us,
The most misrepresented,
The most misunderstood,
The most stereotyped,
On behalf of all Muslimas,
Now you see,
We’re exceptional,
Exceptional women,
Proud Muslimas,
In our hijab,
Our modesty,
Our dignity,
Our choice.
